Lot Essay

A pair of candlesticks of this model, now in the Schloss Pillnitz, near Dresden, is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. 1, p. 286, no.4.15.2.

They are a closely related variant of the model designed by J.D. Dugourc, possibly executed about 1789 for either Madame Elizabeth or the Comte de Provence. There is a pair of this model in the Wallace Collection (F.J.B. Watson, Catalogue, F. 174).

A similar pair was sold in Christie's Great Rooms, 14 May 1970, lot 70, and in these rooms, 28 March 1990, lot 160.
