[CRANE, STEPHEN]. Maggie, a Girl of the Streets. (A Story of New York). By Johnston Smith. [New York: Printed for the Author 1893]. 8vo, original mustard-yellow wrappers, printed in red and black, unopened, 1/4-inch piece chipped from top of spine, lower corner of rear cover and last few leaves slightly frayed (or a trifle rodent-chewed), tiny puncture near front outer joint, small light dampstain at upper left corner of front cover and following 25 or so leaves; morocco silk-lined folding box. FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S RARE FIRST BOOK, which he had printed in an edition of 1100 copies, most of which he used as kindling when the copies failed to sell. The present copy appears to be one of a small cache of Crane family copies that surfaced at auction in the 1930s. Approximately 38 copies (including this one) are recorded (Joseph Katz, "Maggie...A Census," Stephen Crane Newsletter, no. 203, 1967-1969, and an unpublished continuation by Prof. Stanley Wertheim and this cataloguer). BAL 4068. Actually a fine, crisp copy for this book.
