Lot Essay

In 1674, Colbert in his "Grande Comande" at Versailles comissioned four groups representing rapes to be placed around a globe of the world at the top of the escalier en fer à cheval. The project, however was not completed. The present group was removed to the Tuileries in 1716, where it can still be seen.
