Lot Essay

These plates were originally issued by Martin himself, as a follow-on from his Paradise Lost illustrations, but were not a commercial success. He grew disheartened and sold the remaining prints, together with the plates, to Tilt. They first appeared under Tilt's imprint in 1838.
