Lot Essay

At the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris, Anthony Berrus displayed a pivoting shawl with the arms of Napoleon III woven in to the corner. The Empress Eugenie attended the Exhibition and is said to have ordered a shawl by Berrus to be woven by Bietry.
