THIS LATHE WAS IDENTIFIED AS NO.1110 IN THE PEDIGREE OF HOLTZAPFFEL LATHES PUBLISHED BY THE FORMER MUSEUM OF ORNAMENTAL TURNING IN U.S.A (P.157), FROM THE PRESENCE AMONG ITS ACCOMPANYING EQUIPMENT OF THE COMPOUND OVAL/DOUBLE ECCENTRIC CHUCK SO NUMBERED (SEE LOT ...). HOWEVER, THIS CHUCK DOES NOT FIT, AND NEVER HAS FITTED, THIS LATHE. NOR DOES THIS LATHE CONFORM TO THE DESIGN OF THE SERIES IN WHICH NO.1110 FALLS. THE ONLY LATHE IN THE REGISTER WHICH SEEMS TO SUIT THIS LATHE IS NO.400, WHICH WAS SOLD IN 1804, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PARTNERSHIP, BEFORE THE MOVE TO COCKSPUR ST. HOWEVER, ACCORDING TO PAGE 85 OF THE REGISTER, IT WAS RESOLD BETWEEN 1809 AND 1812, WHEN THE ADDRESS COULD HAVE BEEN ADDED (IN CONFIRMATION OF WHICH THE ADDRESS IS INSCRIBED SLIGHTLY OFF-CENTRE). THE LATHE COULD, ALTERNATIVELY, BE ONE OF THOSE IN THE REGISTER FOR WHICH NO DETAILS ARE ENTERED AGAINST THE NUMBER.
THE EXTRA SLIDE ON THE SLIDE REST, ALSO ADAPTED FROM 5-INCH CENTRE HEIGHT, IS PROBABLY INTENDED TO WORK AS A 'GEOMETRIC' SLIDE. THE ENGINE-TURNING SLIDE IS OF THE GUIDE TYPE (V. MATTHEWS: ENGINE TURNING 1650-1980 OR G. DANIELS: WATCHMAKING, CHAPTER 13)
THE INITIALS ELG WHICH APPEAR ON THE LATHE ARE THOSE OF E.L. GRUNING, WHO ACQUIRED IT IN 1927.
