Lot Essay

The bronze version of this sculpture was cast for Jules Mastbaum from a marble in the collection of the Musée Rodin representing a hand emerging from a tomb, a subject Rodin executed as a funerary monument, the occasion for which is not now known. This cast was unique until 1985, when the Musée Rodin cast three more examples for the B. G. Cantor Bequest to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
