Lot Essay

Walter Burley (1275-1345) taught in Paris and Oxford. His Liber de Vita Philosophorum, the first attempt in modern times to write a history of ancient philosophy, was a favourite book in the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Polydore Vergil's 'On the Inventions of All Things' was first published in 1499. An additional five books were added in 1521. Appended to this edition is the Latin poem of Sabellicus who epigrammatises an enormous number of inventions in seven pages.
