Martin Gerbert (Freiherr von Hornau), Prince Abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Blasien in the Black Forest (1720-93) and famous musicologist, records his visits to monastery libraries in search of source material, manuscripts and antiquities. Antonius Matthaeus's collection of pieces of classical scholarship and antiquarian interest begins with Alciati's treatise of the monastic life and his objections against it.
