Lot Essay

The allegorical woodcut by Dürer depicts a female figure, Philosophia, surrounded by medallions representing philosophers of the Ancient world but also including Albertus (Magnus). This woodcut, which is signed with the initials A.D. under the central figure, did not appear in the first issue of this work, and does not appear to have been reprinted elsewhere.
