Lot Essay

Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1822), Swedish physician and botanist, was one of the last pupils of Linée. Determining to travel abroad to collect material, he took employment as medical officer in the Dutch East India Company. In Japan, he collected botanical specimens, while teaching medicine in Nagasaki and Edo. 'These travels are exceedingly valuable with respect to the natural history' (Cox, Literature of Travel, p.343)
