Lot Essay
Still in progress, this is a critical collection of the lives of the Christian saints, 'perhaps the most remarkable collective scholarly undertaking of all ages. The work was inspired by Heribert Rosweyde, brought into being by Jan Bolland and his pupils, the first "Bollandists", Henskens and Papebroch, and carried on to the present day by a group of Belgian Jesuits, never more than six at any time. The removal of St. George from the calendar is an example of the extra-literary effects of the Bollandists' search for truth' (cf.PMM). This run contains the two vols. for January 1643, but lacks the five vols. for October of the same year: it includes the 5th vol. of October, 1786, printed at Brussels, described by Brunet as: 'presque introuvable, parce que les exemplaires en avaient été en grande partie détruits pendant les orages de notre première révolution.' It divides into years of publication as follows: 1643 (2 vols.), 1658 (3 vols.), 1668 (3 vols.), 1675 (3 vols.), 1680 (3 vols.), 1685 (3 vols.), 1695, 1698, 1701, 1707, 1709, 1715, 1719, 1721, 1723, 1725, 1727, 1729, 1731, 1733, 1735, 1737, 1739, 1741, 1743, 1746, 1748, 1750, 1753, 1755, 1762, 1765, 1768, 1770, 1780, 1786, 1887 and 1902.
