Lot Essay

Walter Charleton (1619-1704), physician and royalist was a prolific author of medical, scientific and philosophical works. At the early age of 24 he received the degree of M.D. and was appointed physician to Charles I. After the execution of his patron, although remaining in London, he became physician to his exiled son and was confirmed in his appointment after the Restoration. In 1661 he published a eulogium to the profligate Charles II describing him as one to whom no interest is as dear as religion; a man in whom clemency, justice, piety, fortitude, and magnanimity are found in perfect unison.
