Augusto Torres painted Composición Universal at a time when the Taller Torres-Garcia was enjoying fame and recognition in Montevideo. The Taller had already overcome the first opposition to constructivism in the early 1940s and Uruguayan architects were building constructivist murals in public spaces. In the early 1950s Uruguayan muralism was at its height and the momentum it reached became comparable to the notorious Mexican movement. In 1954 Augusto Torres painted an impressive mural in the Sindicato Médico.

The sun governs Composición Universal-Razón. This important composition, depicting native elements gathered from the Americas, is highly representative of Augusto Torres' oeuvre.
