HUMOROUS VALENTINE CARDS
A collection of seven hand-coloured engraved valentine cards with printed verses, two mechanical cards with pull tags and four of elegant ladies with various bestial heads including a parrot, a cat, a goose and a fox, the verse of the latter reading 'So artfully you play your part, I wonder how you fail, Yet still your lovers all depart And leave you to bewail; Your tender heart receives these shocks, Without one trace of care, It stikes me you're an artful fox, And so I must beware'; an embossed paperlace valentine with hand-coloured centre, with printed verse 'Tho' 50 summer's sun has shed Its light upon thy brow, From infancy you've never changed A 20 you were then - as now, So fare-thee-well when I incline I'll wed a maid for my Valentine', c. 1840-70, L.6½ x 4in.
