THOMAS MANN (1875-1955)
A 3pp. a.l.s dated 1st March 1917, to the editor of the Frankfurter Zeitung, expressing his strong romanticism ('Wenn ich Ihre Aufforderung folge, will ich mich an die Sorgen, die Leidenschaften, die Liebe, den Stolz oder gar den Geist appellieren), and stating that he hopes for a national and not a nationalistic Germany to emerge, not chastened and broken, but untrammelled and hungry of spirit from the storm; and another 4pp. a.l.s. by Mann in German dated Poschinger str. 1, Munich, 10 December 1924, to Herr Diebold, thanking him for his critical appraisal of Der Zauberberg and taking issue with him occasionally on the role he assigns to the chorus of voices.
