GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950)
A partly printed, partly manuscript post-card, initialled and dated Ayot Saint Lawrence, Welwyn, Herts, 12.8.1947, to the periodical The Masque, declaring that: 'Another theatre magazine is not wanted: there are too many already. The Masque can now exist only as what it always was: an interestingly illustrated antiquarian magazine edited by a theatrical antiquary who knew nothing and cared less about the modern drama. A word or a picture later than the XVIIIth century and you are lost ....' The printed section of the card reads: 'Mr. Bernard Shaw ... begs secretaries of societies to strike his name from their lists of available speakers. Mr Shaw does not open exhibitions or bazaars ... neither can he take part in new movements nor contribute to new magazines ....'
