JOHN RUSKIN (1819-1900)
A 4pp. a.l.s. by John Ruskin, [n.d.], to Mr. Cuff his engraver, discussing in great detail an engraving and the corrections to be made to it 'The two main rock subjects will bear much darkening...Leonardo's is so in the original. Darken the little leaves..and lighten the lily in glittering points...Use very close lines to darken with. In the others, graduate the sky darker at top - not patchy but smooth down...The real griffin is perfectly quiet. I have a page of talk about his apathy of body - but his eye is animated - Note the little stroke down in the pupil - much depends on it'.
