A full-length preliminary oil sketch on board, of Sir Winston Churchill as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in the dress of office standing beside a pillar with a port behind painted by Bernard Hailstone -- 19 x 13¾in; A head and shoulder portrait oil sketch of Churchill in the dress of office by the same artist -- 20 x 16in; the plaque that originally went below the official portrait stating 'Sir Winston Churchill...Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports 1941-1965. Painted by Bernard Hailstone. This portrait was presented to Sir Winston Churchilll by the Confederation of the Cinque Ports and was placed in this hall at his direction'; a photographic reproduction of the finished portrait; two photographs of the artist and Churchill discussing the painting; the Luncheon table plan and Church service from the presentation which took place at a meeting of the Courts of Brotherhood and Guestling of the Confederation of Cinque Ports, held at the White Rock Pavilion, Hastings, on September 7th 1955; and a quantity of other ephemera including Churchill's leather suitcase in which the uniform was carried to the artist's studio.

Lot Essay

Bernard Hailstone was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, he was known for his portraits of the Royal Family including The Queen, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and The Queen Mother as well as those of Paul Mellon, Peter Ustinov and Sir Laurence Olivier whose portrait hangs in the bar of the Garrick Club. In 1941 he became an official war artist where in this capacity he painted Lord Louis Mountbatten and key members of his staff which now hang in the Imperial War Museum.
