Although Alfred Jacob Miller achieved artistic prominence with his romantic images of the American West, he also produced a number of portraits and genre scenes, based on literary sources as well as everyday life. Artist's Studio--The Critic is a fine example of the latter--a woman sweeping a studio floor has stopped to examine an easel painting. Because of stylistic similarities between this work and The Marchioness, this picture can be dated circa 1840.
