Lot Essay

Nelson's Victory at Trafalgar in 1805 inspired a number of silver commemorative objects. A snuff-box with a portrait of Nelson's colleague, Admiral Lord Collingwood, also dated 1809, is illustrated in Eric Delieb, Investing in Silver, 1967, p.113. It is likely that the ship depicted on the present box is Nelson's ship The Victory.
