Lot Essay

It was on the strength of a series of drawings executed by Lennon at The Imperial Hotel, Torquay, of which the above is one, that the publisher won the contract for Lennon's two books In His Own Write and A Spaniard In The Works, 1964 and 1965 respectively. A similar drawing to the above, from the same series, was used to illustrate the cover of the souvenir concert programme for The Night Of A Hundred Stars, July 23rd, 1964, a special midnight revue held in aid of the Combined Theatrical Charities Appeals Council at the London Palladium.
