Lot Essay

Henry MacKenzie remained chiefly responsible for the publication of The Lounger and in number 97, for Dec. 9, 1786 he contributed a review of Robert Burns in which he said 'Though I am very far from meaning to compare the rustic bard to Shakespeare, yet whoever will read his lighter and more humorous poems...will percieve with what uncommon penetration and sagasity this Heaven taught ploughman, from his humble and unlettered station, has looked upon men and manners.'
