Lot Essay

Established in Birmingham 1899 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, Liberty & Co. were manufacturers of objects in the Arts & Crafts style. One of the principle designers of metalwork was Archibald Knox (1865-1941) who was born on the Isle of Man and whose main resource for design was the Book of Kells. The silver produced by Liberty & Co. between 1899 and 1927 was in the Arts & Crafts style using Celtic motifs, a hand-hammered finish and at times set with semi-precious stones or enamel.
