Rectangular, the molded brass base on four bracket feet surmounted by a copper box, the rims with notches at intervals, the sides with foliage decorated panels and with the dates 1866 and 1916, the hinged cover with scrolling foliate within rectangular panel with D.F and D.S with a cross forme©e between, the interior cover set with a panel with the inscription 1866.11 DECEMBER.1916, TIL.MINDE.OM, DET.FORENEDE.DAMP-SKIBS-SELSKABS 50 AAR-IGE.STIFTELSESDAG, with wood interior, marked under base

Lot Essay

In 1916 the Forende Dampskibs-Selsab, a ship manufacturer, commissioned Georg Jensen Silversmithy to design and produce this box to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The United Steamship Co. A gold cigar box was made and presented to King Christian X of Denmark. Examples in silver and copper were also produced and presented to the company's employees.
