STUART, Charles Edward (1799-1880) and John Sobieski Stolberg Stuart (1795-1872). [Vestiarium Scoticum], Edinburgh, J. Whyte, [?1842], 4°, 75 hand-coloured Berlin woolwork patterns, manuscript index leaf (occasional marks), contemporary half roan (worn).

The Stuart brothers claimed to be grandchildren of Prince Charles Edward Stewart, and to substantiate their claim published Vestiarium Scoticum in 1842 from a supposed 18th-century manuscript. The work was vigorously copied by the textile market and retail warehouses, giving momentum to the great rise in popularity of tartan manufacture in the 19th-century. This copy was used as a sample book from which customers could choose patterns.
