Of baluster form, finely molded with a muscular nude male figure, his arms, head, and knee forming the rim and his legs flowing into the form, in a sea-green glaze shading to slate blue below, incised with the conjoined-A mark and VAN BRIGGLE 1902 III x

cf. Van Briggle exhibited the Despondency vase at the Paris salon of 1903, where it was awarded a gold medal, and purchased by the Louvre. Van Briggle died in 1904 at the age of 35.
