A FORMER PRESIDENT RECOMMENDS A REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN FOR AN APPOINTMENT
Adams recommends a childhood friend: "Captain Lemuel Clark of Boston informs me that he has a desire to be appointed under you to the place in the customs lately filled by Col[onel] Perkins now deceased. At his desire I can cheerfully say that I have known him from my youth, that I believe Captain Clark well qualified for the service, that he served by my appointment as Captain of Marines in our Navy with reputation, and that he served through the last War by Sea and by Land. I do therefore heartily recommend him for the appointment..."
