Autograph endorsement signed ("A.Lincoln") as President, to Surgeon General William A.Hammond, [Washington, D.C.], 10 January 1863. 4 lines plus signature and dateline, written on the front of a U.S. Sanitary Commission printed envelope addressed to President Lincoln (contents not present).
President Lincoln requests Surgeon General Hammond's approval: "Respectfully submitted to Surgeon General, for his opinion whether Mr. Bushnell should be appointed, as recommended..." Basler, VI:53. Hammond responds beneath: "Respectfully returned to His Excellency the President with the recommendation that Mr. Bushnell be appointed as there is a place for him at Louisville..." Bushnell has not been identified, and no record of his appointment has been located.
