LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Autograph free frank ("A.Lincoln") as President on envelope addressed in Lincoln's hand to "A. Chester Washington DC.," [Washington, D.C., 7 November 1864], 75 x 13 1/2mm. (2 7/8 x 5 1/4 in.), circular "Washington D.C. Free" hand stamp, soiled, verso torn. A frank dated the day before the dramatic 1864 election in which Lincoln won the Presidency for a second term. On this day Lincoln directed Major General Benjamin F. Butler to avoid a clash between U.S. military forces and state militia during the election in New York City.
