FRANKLIN PIERCE: "THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF MY NOMINATION IMPRESS MY MIND"

Just one week after winning the Democratic presidential nomination, a humble Pierce acknowledges the congratulations of his sister-in-law and thanks his family and his Christian faith: "...The position in which I am so unexpectedly placed and the circumstances of my nomination impress my mind & have from the first with the strongest conviction of something like a special providence -- I have never experienced for a moment the slightest feeling of elation -- but on the contrary a humble & subdued spirit has constantly predominated, tho' unaccompanied by anything like dejection or disturbing apprehension...[W]hatever may be before me, I have a place in the hearts and share in the prayers of many disinterested patriotic christian friends...You ask, 'Are you prepared for defeat still more -- are you prepared for success?' I believe I will not return to answer. You shall see..." Pierce goes on to describe a curious dream in which his dead mother-in-law tells him, "There is nothing so serious as life..."

Franklin Pierce was elected the fourteenth President in November 1852.
