POLK, JAMES, K. President. Autograph endorsement signed ("James K. Polk") as President, Washington, D.C., 17 July 1846. 1 page, folio, 320 x 200mm. (12 1/2 x 7 3/4 in.), integral blank, browned, silked from verso, one tiny hole from acidic ink.
THE PRESIDENT, VICE-PRESIDENT AND OTHERS ENDORSE AN OPTICIAN
An unusual Presidential document, consisting of a testimonial furnished to a spectacles-maker. Polk's endorsement appears in the center of the page: "Mr. Siga has furnished me with a pair of spectacles which I think superior to any I have ever used...." Polk was not Siga's only satisfied customer in the nation's capitol, evidently, for the document also bears an 8-line testimonial by Thomas J. Rusk (1803-1857), Senator from Texas, who had played an important role in the annexation of Texas and had served as President of the commission which drew up that state's Constitution. Others who endorse Siga's wares include Vice President George Mifflin Dallas, John J. Crittenden and 20 other Senators, Congressmen and others.
It is also countersigned by Vice-President George M. Dallas and J.J. Crittenden.
