TYLER, JOHN, President. Autograph letter signed ("John Tyler") to former Secretary of the Navy John Y. Mason, Sherwood Forest, Virginia, 12 November 1849. 2 1/2 pages, 4to, 250 x 200mm. (10 x 8 in.), on blue-blue paper, in very good condition. Former President Tyler describes his financial difficulties to his former Secretary of the Navy and asks about postponing payment of a debt: "When I purchased this property it was encumbered by a Deed in Trust to receive the payment of certain notes annually to the James River and Havanna Company by Mr. C.H. Minge. I think there were eight in all of each which has been punctually redeemed by me as they fell due. The holder was Mr. Nolting of your City [Richmond]...The last bond which falls due the 25th...has been...discounted at the Farmers Bank, and I fear that in consequence of some unusually heavy drafts on me the past summer, I may not be in a situation to redeem at the day. My responsibility arises under the Deed in Trust and by no direct connexion with the note...My object in writing now is to suggest some mode by which I can come to the relief of the company without making immediate payment. Can I for instance obtain a renewal of the note by becoming the last endorser, or can the Company redeem the note and take my individual notes payable in 4 - 8 - and 12 months?...In short please suggest the expedient which will best tally with the wants of the Company and indulgence to myself..." Tyler offers to visit Richmond to discuss the matter and comments on the eulogy given by Mason at President Polk's funeral: "I take occasion to congratulate you on your excellent Eulogy on Mr. Polk. It is chaste and most happy in thought and expression, and while indulging in no extravagance of eulogy weaves a bright garland around the memory of the deceased..." Young (1799-1859) was the only member of Tyler's cabinet to be retained by Polk upon his assumption of the Presidency.
