The first description of the stethoscope by its inventor who, observing children listening to sounds transmitted along a wooden stick, adapted the idea "for better hearing the amplified sounds within the chest ... What originally took the form of a roll of bound, stiff paper, later became a tube of cedar wood and still later took the form that we now know" [Dibner 129]
