A late 16th/early 17th Century gilt brass and silvered copper pocket diptych dial, by Hans Tucher the corner stamped with compass points and named winds and rotating 'hand' pointer, engraved withstylised zephyrs and clouds; the inner face with pin-holes for the string gnomon(missing) for latitudes 42°, 45°, 48°,51° and 54°, zodiac signs and scale for length of days, the reverse stamped DIE . SPICZ ZEIGT . DES . TAGS AB . VND . VNENEN VND . DIE . ZWOLFF ZEICHEN . VND . DAS SCHNVRLEIN . DIE STVND . DER LAND VND . STEDT, and enclosed by engraved scrolling foliage decoration; the horizontal compass wiht slender iron needle and brass cap and hour scales for 42°, 45°, 48°, 51° and 54°, stamped with the makers name and serpent trade mark; the underside with volvelle, calendar and hour scales, the quarters of the moon and engraved zephyrs and clouds, with moulded geometric decorated border and suspension loop 3 1/8in(8cm)long
