AMERICAN VALENTINE CARD
An embossed paperlace valentine card with hand-coloured details, the centre applied with a silver garland encircling a hand-written verse, the verso inscribed in pencil 'Give me a friend to love me/A friend that I can love/And let tho storm around me blow/The sky be dark above/The breathing of that gentle heart/The light of that bright eye/Shall be to me a world of wealth/The rainbow of my sky/And if your thoughts with mine combine/Pray accept me for your/Valentine', 7¼ x 4¼in., c. 1860-70; with its original lithographed envelope addressed to 'Miss Julia Beecher', and post marked 'Waterbury Feb 22'.
