Lot Essay

This original, unmodified Clover anaesthetic apparatus was invented in 1887 by Joseph Clover (1825-1882) born at Aylsham Norfork. This was the first piece of equipment to provide a conveniant means of regulating the amount of ether vapour inhaled during general anaesthesia. Clover now figures in the coat of arms of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
