Frederick Bridgland had intended to go on the expedition, bowing out at the last minute owing to family commitments, though he even piloted the boat from harbour on its departure. This ill-fated expedition to explore the little known region around Enderby Land in Antarctic, undertaken through the finances of John Quiller Rowett, ended with the death of Shackleton on the island of South Georgia on 5 January 1922.
