Lot Essay

The pattern for these serpentine pier-tables carved with fruit and flowers, emblematic of Peace and Plenty derives from a 'marble table' after the menuisier Nicholas Pineau issued in Batty Langley's City and Country Builder's and Workman's Treasury of Designs, 1740, pl.CXLI, they are designed ensuite with the pier-glasses (lot 119) and relate to carvers pattern's in Matthias Lock's Six Tables, 1746
