Titus Flavius Vespasianus
Roman Emperor A.D. 69 - 79.
According to Edward Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, 'The birth of Vespasian was mean: his grandfather had been a private soldier, his father a petty officer of the revenue, his own merit had raised him in an advanced age to the Empire'.

Once appointed Emperor, Vespasian ruled with a firm hand. He kept strict control over finance and was able to build both the Temple of Peace, which here takes his name, and the Colosseum.
