Marc Secretan, Professor of Optics at the University of Lausanne, moved to Paris in 1848, to take control of an optical instrument firm, thereafter the production was small but the optical quality high. In 1865 he took a junior partner and his firm was renamed "Lerebours et Secretan". He retired in 1868. This type of stand was specifically designed to fold up when not in use, or for transportation from place to place
