The inscription reads 'Presented by a number of Ladies and Gentlemen in The Parish of Markinch to Alexander Reid Esq Surgeon As a Testimony of Respect for his Unremitted Attention and Eminent Success as a Medical Practicioner in that Parish during a Residence of Sixteen Years, 29th June, 1829'
