W. Porter, a monoumental stone mason from Nottingham carved this miniature sanctuary whilst in Australia prospecting for gold. It took ten years to complete and was sent to England in 1902.

Lot Essay

With one clock movement concealed in the inlaid walnut base marking time at Greenwich, New York, Calcutta and Sydney, striking hours and quarters, with illuminated altar and interior, carved in Caen stone, with delicate gilded relief and gargoyle and saintly figures, the top supported on black marble columns, on a similar base with panelled doors enclosing a carved alabaster altar, with white holly screen, the interior carved with Biblical scenes and tracery window.
