Lot Essay

The Spanish Shawl is one of several works painted in Glasgow during 1916, including Lady of the Carnation (Laing Art Gallery), which was probably executed from the artist's studio at the Glasgow School of Art. These paintings centre upon a single female figure positioned in a Neo-classical pose, often holding richly patterned shawls against a decorated background. Many of these paintings were framed in a distinctively Glasgow-style moulding which was supplied by John Gibson, Bothwell Street, Glasgow.
