One of the most common diseases at this time was syphilis, first introduced into the Old World by natives brought back by Christopher Columbus. One symptom was the blocking of the urethra: when the victim found it was impossible to urinate, a catheter was used to free the obstruction. Anaesthesia was not available until 1848.
