Albert Edward James Matthias Bayliss was born at Tipton, Staffordshire in 1863 and joined West Bromwich Albion from Wednesday Old Athletic in August 1884. As an inside-right and centre-forward he was a powerful and frequent goal-scorer for West Bromwich Albion during their successful period in the mid to late 1880's. He was captain when they won the F.A. Cup in 1888 and served as a Director of the club whilst still a player. He eventually became Chairman until resigning in 1905 and was elected a life member of the club in 1909.
