Lot Essay

Lennon gave this plaque to his Aunt after his career took off. She apparantly kept it until her death as it particularly reminded her of Lennon's sense of humour. Mimi's erroneous prediction about John's career prospects became quite famous and is referred to in a number of Lennon's biographies. As a teenager Lennon pestered Mimi to buy him a real guitar as the (5 guitar he had coulden't take the strain of all the public performances with the Quarry Men. Reluctantly Mimi gave in and took him to the famous musical instrument shop Hessy's off Whitchapel in Liverpool. Lennon chose a (17 Spanish-style guitar, and spent many hours practising in his bedroom. ...Finally, when she could no longer stand his foot tapping on the ceiling, Mimi ordered him into the porch at Mendips...on one occasion when he was banished there Mimi boomed the words: 'The guitar's all very well, John but you'll never make a living at it!
