In this match, played at Highbury on 12th March 1921 before 35,000 spectators, the Football League defeated the Scottish League 1-0.

Although Paterson was born in London he spent much of his early life in Scotland. At the time of his only Football League International appearance he was playing club football for Arsenal, but was looked upon as being "too Scottish" by the English F.A. for them to award him a full International Cap
