Lot Essay

The above cap represents one of the greatest football matches ever. England, undefeated at home to foreign opposition were resoundly beaten by the "Magic Magyars" 6-3, before 100,000 spectators at Wembley on 25th Novembr 1953. The tactics of the Hungarians were unknown to an England side full of gifted and well known players. The Hungarians passed the ball in triangles; the centre-forward lying deep and leaving Harry Johnston in no man's land; and Ferenc Puskas dictating play, left England bewildered and dazzled. Puskas scored two goals and Hidegkuti bagged a hat-trick with Bozsik scoring one goal. England's goals were scored by Sewel, Mortensen and Ramsey. Ernie Taylor won his first and last cap in this match, as did George Robb. Other greats were never to play for England again, including Ramsey, Johnston and Mortensen.

The jersey in this lot does not relate to the above match. Taylor's only appearance for England was against Hungary when they wore white cotton jerseys with button-up collars. Therefore, it is unknown what match the above jersey represents
.
