Lot Essay

In 1784 the Poliograph Society founded by Mr.Joseph Booth held its first exhibition in which de Loutherbourg exhibited two pictures, 'Winter', and the companion 'Summer'. The Society had perfected a method of mass reproducing oil paintings the technique of which fell out of use and is now no longer known. See R.C.B Gardiner, De Loutherbourg and the Poliograph Process, County Life, 22 October 1948, p.824.
